Political Education

Since the summer of 2023, I have been actively involved in various political education initiatives in cooperation with the Sächsische Landeszentrale für Politische Bildung (Saxony Center for Civic Education). Within the framework of the event series ‘Controversial on Site’, I have given several talks, including:

  • Election Pledges under Scrutiny: How Reliable Are Parties’ Promises? This talk examines the role of political promises in German democracy, drawing on research into election and coalition pledges as well as the performance of the current federal government. How many promises do parties make, and how many are actually fulfilled? Using examples from across Germany and specifically from Saxony, I explore the reliability of promises and the implications for voter trust. The presentation combines research insights with open discussion, encouraging citizens to critically reflect on the credibility of political commitments. [Link]

  • Does Democracy Still Need Political Parties? Between Political Disenchantment and New Forms of Civic Engagement: This talk addresses the changing role of parties in democracy. While they have long been seen as indispensable pillars of the political system, their reputation is in decline — increasingly perceived as elitist, opaque, or overly power-driven. I explore the historical role, functions, and criticisms of parties, while also considering alternatives and reforms. Together with participants, I discuss emerging forms of political engagement and ask: how can democracy be shaped for the future? [Link]

Beyond this lecture series, I am also engaged in other political education formats. For example, I participated in a town hall discussion with citizens and the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, at Forum Wissen during the Action Day for Democracy in Göttingen [Link].
